When Adam and I were in Iceland, we went on a city tour of Reykjavík one day and visited a few different spots. The first stop was the Harpa Opera House which was such a beautifully constructed building.
We were lucky enough to catch a live opera performance while we were there!
We also visited the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum. Adam found some of the sculptures there to be quite peculiar…
We found ice cream, and a mirror to capture the proof. (I don’t really have a unibrow, it was just really windy that day.)
Our last stop was at the Höfði House. “It is best known as the location for the 1986 Reykjavík Summit meeting of presidents Ronald Reagan of the United States and Mikhail Gorbachev of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. That effectively was a step to the end of the Cold War. Within the building the flags of the United States and the Soviet Union are cross-hung to commemorate the meeting.” (wiki)
We ate a lot of falafel in Iceland. I know, I know, falafel in Iceland? Oddly enough, we were able to find it in quite a few restaurants while we were there. We figured finding vegetarian options in a country known for its fish wouldn’t be easy, but I was pleasantly surprised by how veggie friendly Reykjavík was. We ate falafel sandwiches at Durum one afternoon and watched the angry man who owned the place bang on the windows and yell at people for using his bathroom without paying. He was nice to us, though. We paid.
These veggie sandwiches were everywhere and we ate a ton of them, too. I also consumed a whole lot of chai on our trip. Did you know there isn’t a single Starbucks anywhere in Iceland? A bit strange since Reykjavík seems like the perfect place for one, but I sort of loved it. There were plenty of other coffee shops to explore. 🙂
I heard there was a Lebowski bar in Reykjavík, so I was excited to check it out! I ordered a White Russian of course, and Adam ordered an Icelandic beer called Gull.
We found a big market one day in the city and explored the booths. Lots of fish, pig heads, pig feet, goose eggs, etc. I found a ton of shoes and tights I loved, but didn’t end up purchasing any. I only walked away with some yarn for a friend.
Reykjavík is such a cool city, and going through these photos makes me miss it! I still have a ton of other photos to sort through from when we explored outside Reykjavík and saw the gorgeous scenery of Iceland. I’ll try to have those up soon! Happy Sunday!
